Fire blight is a growing problem for the East Coast pome fruit growers impacting apple, pear and Asian pear production. Assistant Professor Srdjan Aćimović and his collaborators on the USDA CPPM project, “Creating Next-Gen Controls for Fire Blight Cankers, Blossom, and Shoot Blight with Copper, PGRs, Plant Activators, and Anti-Biofilm Enzymes” will host a Fire Blight Management Workshop on July 25, 2024, in Winchester, VA. Growers and farm workers from Virginia, the surrounding regional states, and beyond are invited to attend this in-depth workshop, which will provide an overview of the latest results from the CPPM project, a summary of fire blight control strategies, hands-on training in fire blight canker visual detection, and in-field demonstrations of research plots used in the project.
Registration and name tag pickup will begin at 8:30 AM in the hallway of the Alson H. Smith Jr. Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AHS Jr AREC) located at 595 Laurel Grove Rd, Winchester, VA 22602. The meeting will start at 9:00 AM in the main conference room of AHS Jr AREC. Following the indoor presentations, we will visit the experimental apple ‘Fuji’ block at AHS Jr AREC, just outside the building, to discuss the results of the fire blight trials. Afterwards, we will travel to a nearby commercial orchard using own vehicles to conduct hands-on fire blight canker detection training and demonstrate practices for their pruning and removal. Fire Blight es un problema creciente que afecta la producción de manzanos, perales y perales asiáticos de la costa este.
